The Oscars rules could change due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has derailed the film industry by delaying most of the year’s major releases.

According to Deadline, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ board of governors is due to meet virtually on Tuesday to “discuss and approve” rule changes.

Sources told the publication that eligibility rules are expected to be altered.

Some films have been released directly via video on demand due to the coronavirus crisis, which has forced movie theatres to shut down. Others have come out on streaming platforms such as Netflix.

Current eligibility rules allow films released by streaming companies to be considered for Oscars, but only if they also meet specific requirements for a theatrical release.

According to Deadline, some of the Oscar categories could also experience changes.

Back in March, the Academy said in a statement that it would consider making changes as necessary.

“We are in the process of evaluating all aspects of this uncertain landscape and what changes may need to be made,” the organisation stated at the time.

“We are committed to being nimble and forward-thinking as we discuss what is best for the future of the industry and will make further announcements in the coming days.”

The next Oscars are currently scheduled to take place on 28 February 2021.
