Mission: Impossible 7 filming to resume from September, says Simon Pegg

‘I don’t know what the testing situation is, or whether they’ll be able to be tested regularly’

The seventh film in the Mission: Impossible franchise will resume filming in September, according to actor Simon Pegg.

Production on the action film had halted as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Pegg, who plays the character of Benji Dunn, told Variety that “the plan” is to restart in September.

“That will begin with the outdoor stuff,” said the actor. “That feels fairly doable, and obviously there will be precautions put in place.”

Discussing the logistics of production, Pegg said: “People that are involved in any close proximity stuff, it will have to be determined that they’re safe to do that.

“I don’t know what the testing situation is, how that works, or whether they’ll be able to be tested regularly.”

Mission: Impossible 7’s first assistant director Tommy Gormley confirmed the plans on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, saying: “This is our challenge. We are not a chamber piece movie. We do spectacle, and that is what people expect of us.

“If we have the protocols in place and we break down all the procedures very carefully…we will get it going again.

He continued: “Some things are very challenging such as stunt scenes, crowd scenes etc. but we can’t do a ‘Mission Impossible’ movie and not have a fight scene or car scenes in it.”

Little is known about the plot of the upcoming film, which will see Tom Cruise reprise the role of secret agent Ethan Hunt. Mission: Impossible 7 is the first of two planned films in the franchise to be directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who also directed the acclaimed sixth entry, Mission: Impossible – Fallout.
