Golden Globes 2019: Benedict Cumberbatch, Emily Blunt and 'Bodyguard' lead list of British nominees

Important nominations went to British performers and works with UK ties

The Golden Globes 2019 nominations are in – and British performers and works have been singled out in several key categories.

Benedict Cumberbatch, Emily Blunt, and Richard Madden are among those in the running to walk away with an award during the ceremony on 6 January.

British films and series – or works with significant ties to the UK – have also scored important nominations.

Bodyguard, the BBC's acclaimed drama series, is a contender in the Best Television Series – Drama category.

It has also earned Madden, who plays the lead role, a nomination for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama title.

A Very English Scandal, which, as its name would suggest, is a British three-part miniseries, has been nominated three times in three different categories.

The series itself is a contender for the Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television award.

Hugh Grant, who plays Jeremy Thorpe in the show, is nominated in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television category.

Ben Wishaw, who stars as Norman Josiffe (also known as Norman Scott), is in the running for the Best Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television title.

Rosamund Pike, a previous Golden Globe nominee for Gone Girl, landed a spot on this year's list, in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama category, thanks to her performance as late journalist Marie Colvin in A Private War.

Cumberbatch earned a nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television for his role as Patrick Melrose in the miniseries of the same name.

Thandie Newton is in the running once again in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television category for her performance in Westworld.

Bohemian Rhapsody – an American film about the British rock band Queen and their frontman Freddie Mercury – has landed two major nominations.

The first one went to the film itself, which is one of five possible winners in the Best Motion Picture – Drama category.

The second has been handed to Rami Malek, the American actor who plays the iconic British frontman, now a contender for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama award.

The Favourite, a British, American, and Irish co-production starring Olivia Colman as Anne, Queen of Great Britain, has been nominated five times, including in the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Screenplay – Motion Picture categories.

The film earned Colman a nomination for Best Actress in a musical or comedy.

Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz also scored nominations for their respective supporting roles.

Mary Poppins Returns, the American film starring Emily Blunt as the English nanny, is also a strong contender on this year's list.

It has earned a nomination for Best Original Score, and one in the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category.

Blunt has been nominated for Best Actress in a musical or comedy.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is among the five nominees for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy title, for his performance in the lamplighter Jack.
