While the majority of Golden Globe winners decided to take Trump to task, La La Land’s Ryan Gosling used his speech for something much more personal: thanking his partner, actress Eva Mendes.

“This isn’t the first time I’ve been mistaken for Ryan Reynolds,” Gosling began, poking fun at Reynolds who was also nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical for Deadpool.

“You don’t get to be here without standing on the shoulders’ of a mountain of people,” he continued. “There’s just no time to thank everyone but would like to try and thank one person properly.

“While I was singing and dancing and playing piano, and having one of the best experiences I’ve ever had on a film, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second, and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer.”

“If she hadn’t taken all that on so that I could have this experience, it would surely be someone else up here other than me today. So, sweetheart, thank you. To my daughters, Amada and Esmerelda, I love you.” Watch below.

Gosling then dedicated the award to the memory of Mendes brother, Juan Carlos Mendes, while being clapped off stage.

Other notable speeches were made by Donald Glover, who thanked his son and the band Migos, as well as Meryl Streep, who criticised President-elect Trump.

Meanwhile, Gosling’s film La La Land won a record-breaking number of awards, with Gosling’s co-star Emma Stone taking home Best Actress in a Musical. Some critics on Twitter were angered Moonlight didn’t win more awards.
