Serkis said: “Film without music would be Laurel without Hardy, like Queen without Freddie Mercury – it’s like Britain without Europe.”

The moment is awkward when taking into account that Queen have been touring for a decade with Adam Lambert in Mercury’s position. What’s more cringeworthy is the fact that May and Rogert Taylor were both present to represent Bohemian Rhapsody, which saw Rami Malek win Best actor.

Many Twitter users highlighted the accidental dig on Twitter.

It was a big evening for the Brits as well as Mexico with The Favourite and Roma winning the majority of the evening’s main prizes.

Other winners included Green Book star Mahershala Ali for Best Supporting Actor, and BlacKkKlansman, which saw Spike Lee take home the trophy for Best Adapted Screenplay.
