Filming has started on the sequel to Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, and its taking place on English shores at London’s Shepperton Studios.

Directed this time by James Bobin, Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass will tell an “all-new” tale that takes audiences back to Underland and back in time.

New cast members have been revealed, with Sacha Baron Cohen and Rhys Ifans joining the huge line-up. Burton will remain on board as executive producer, a Disney press release confirms.

Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway are all returning to their roles, while Stephen Fry, Alan Rickman and Michael Sheen shall voice the Cheshire Cat, the Blue Caterpillar and the White Rabbit.

The 3D film is scheduled for release on 27 May 2016 and will be hoping to ride on the success of the 2010 original.

The first movie grossed more than $1 billion at the global box office and won two Oscars for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design.

Both the stories are based on the books by Lewis Carroll, with Through the Looking Glass following Alice’s mission to help the Mad Hatter after he guided her home on her first visit to Underland.

Disney has more live-action versions of classic animated films in the pipeline: Cinderella and The Jungle Book are due in 2015 while Beauty and the Beast is in development.
