Inside/Outside Cinema pays homage to Mary Wollstonecraft

Dalston residents may be surprised to learn that Mary Wollstonecraft once lived on their doorstep. The 18th-century feminist and commentator was born in Spitalfields and set up a school for girls on Newington Green. And tomorrow, at a one-night only, pop-up Inside/Outside Cinema in Gillett Square, there's a chance to find out more about her life and legacy.

Several short Wollstonecraft-focused films are on the agenda, including Wollstonecraft Live, set up as if Wollstonecraft was making a film about her own life. There's also Vindication, a costume drama telling the story of a fictitious first meeting between Wollstonecraft and William Godwin, whom she later married. "We wanted to remind people of her presence on Newington Green and to celebrate that," says Anna Birch, the Director of Fragments & Monuments, a performance and film company based in Hackney. "She was very forward looking and relates to today's diverse community in Hackney."

These short films, plus animations by artists from Hackney's The Drawing Room gallery and a film by East London Dance company, which explores Dalston's public spaces, are being screened at the Portavilion bubble, which is travelling around London hosting different events throughout the summer. While all of the films will be screened inside in the usual way, there will also be projections on to the outside of the bubble. So even if you can't get a seat inside, you won't miss out.
