A sequel to Independence Day has been green-lit for a 2016 release, when man will battle alien once more.

Sadly it doesn't look as though Will Smith will be returning to punch extra-terrestrials in the face, though Jeff Goldblum has been approached to return as computer expert David Levinson.

"I had a meeting and have been talking over the last several months or year with Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the producer," the actor said back in October. "They've been cooking up and say they have a part for me in what they hope will be a plan to make another one pretty soon."

20th Century Fox is lining up the sequel for 24 June, 2016, according to Deadline, coinciding with the original film's 20th anniversary.

Aside from the alien punching scene, it is also remembered for the President's rousing speech in front of the White House and Will Smith "awwww hell nawwww"ing the sight of spaceships.

There have been no shortage of sequels to 80s and 90s films lined up many years later recently, with a Blade Runner 2 on the way and a Mrs Doubtfire 2 previously in the works prior to Robin Williams' death.
