Work this way

Learning voraciously and concentrating on relationships are two of the five "essential ingredients of a reinvented career" offered by Generation X guru Bruce Tulgan in his book, Work This Way, published this week by Capstone Press. Tulgan, whose previous book, Managing Generation X, helped to define one of the key management trends of the moment, sees this volume as a guide to prospering, rather than merely surviving, in a world where traditional jobs are becoming more scarce.

IT girls (and boys)

One field with no shortage of vacancies is information technology; a recent report from Focus Central London Training and Enterprise Council found that City employers, for example, named IT as the most important skill. But how do graduates find the jobs that they want? Publisher GTI thinks it has found the answer in IT Now, a glossy magazine that, it claims, amounts to "a new concept in graduate careers publishing". The "fun approach" is demonstrated by the editorship being held by "Dr Job", who is, apparently, already a star of the company's website - find the GTI careerscape at www.gti.co.uk..

Mind your business

The Association of Business Schools has produced guidelines for MBA degrees with the aim of establishing a clear understanding of what an MBA is and what it offers, as well as providing an indication of the standards that all business schools should be reaching and exceeding in this area.

Bridge over the Atlantic

Oxford University's Templeton College has teamed up with Dartmouth College's Amos Tuck, the highly-regarded US business school with which it already has a relationship, to run a three-and-a-half-week seminar designed to make it easier for undergraduates to bridge the gap between university and business. The initiative, a global version of Tuck's existing Business Bridge Program, is being offered to 50 college seniors, recent undergraduates and postgraduates, and will include tuition in a range of topics, including accounting, marketing, communication and strategy.
