Back to ecology. The compact disc, one of the icons of the Eighties, is already suffering meltdown, it seems. Last week, Miami-based Global Plastics Resources Recovery Inc trumpeted its latest technology at Midem (the annual music industry jamboree at Cannes), claiming it is now recycling around 60m unwanted CDs a year using a process that lifts off the aluminium layer, enabling the polycarbonate base to be re- used in any appropriate plastic product. Sony Music's USA distribution arm has reportedly signed a two-year deal.
