Clubs; After dark

On the forthcoming Bank Holiday west London is still the place to be. London's Notting Hill Carnival is just a couple of weeks away, but no one seems quite sure who will be performing. Kiss 100 FM's regular stage spot is being redeveloped, forcing them to cancel their stage event. Kiss still plan to broadcast two days of live programmes, but their main rivals, Radio 1, have also cancelled their own stage on health and safety grounds. Carnival with no Kiss or Radio 1 stages? Sad, but true.

Rap fans can check out New York legend Funkmaster Flex at Tim Westwood's Saturday-night gig and Monday's post-carnival party at The Temple. Future dates for Westwood's excellent Pool Parties have been cancelled after the last gig got bum-rushed. Contrary to rumours, nobody was seriously hurt, and there are plans to continue at another venue a.s.a.p.

Dave Beer, of Back2Basics fame, is turning heads in Leeds with his new Saturday gig, Basics @ The Mint. The venue holds 600, and the intimate vibe has them queuing up for miles.

Talking of travelling for miles to get to clubs, look to Cornwall. Everyone under the age of 30 (and plenty more aged under 18) congregates in Newquay at one of two venues, Sailors or Berty's. It's basically bangin' house, cheap alcohol (not seen in London since '85) and snogging... Great clubbing. If it stayed open past 12.30am, I'd be tempted to go back.
