House, garage, techno, jungle, these are all very well, but whatever happened to the funk? Well it's still there, you just have to search hard for it. Try Revolution at the Subterania on Friday nights. Femi, Sammy B, T-Money, Alex Baby and Dodge play new and old soul, traditional hip-hop and some dirty funk. 'We are keeping the summer going,' Says Femi. Considering it's in Ladbroke Grove, it is remarkably friendly and unpretentious, and tonight there's an explosive new singer, Leena Conquest, making a personal appearance. She's a Texan, who lives in Austria, and her debut single, 'Boundaries', already deleted, has become a club classic. She's worth checking.

Funk's all very well but jungle's still where it's at. On Sunday, Thunder and Joy has a special Halloween Ball where the 'bat bites back'. Thunder and Joy is possibly the most progressive club in London at the moment. The music is right on the cutting edge, a mix of jungle, hardcore and garage delivered by DJs' DJs. It all happens in Raw, a two-room club four floors underground, beneath the YMCA, just off Tottenham Court Road. This is a special week for Thunder and Joy. Along with DJs Bucky Ranks, DJ Ron, Grooverider and Rodney T, they have Brocky, generally considered the most happening DJ on the jungle scene. Meanwhile, in the second room, Paul 'Trouble' Anderson spins garage. Club cognoscenti rate Trouble as the UK's greatest living DJ.
