What happens when the man that you've been married to for decades turns out to have a double life? Isabel Fonsesca's slinkily assured debut novel shows a wry appreciation of the complexities of modern love.

The 45-year-old Jean Hubbard is an American health writer married to Mark, a top London advertising executive.

It's while on sabbatical on the tropical island of St Jacques that she first comes across a graphic email intended for her husband's eyes only, and which she chooses to answer, impersonating his voice.

Attachment is a novel that presumes to put a woman's mid-life crises – sexual, spiritual and intellectual- centre-stage.
