Stephen King reveals ‘best idea he never wrote’ is ‘hellish’ Friday the 13th spinoff

He said he’ll ‘probably never' get around to writing it

Stephen King has shared the “best idea” he has ever had for a novel – and it is set in the world of one of the horror’s most famous movie franchises.

The author behind classics such as The Shining and Misery revealed the news on Twitter, revealing that he once planned to write a story told through the eyes of Jason Voorhees, the masked killer at the centre of the Friday the 13th series.

“The best novel idea I never wrote (and probably never will) is I JASON, the first-person narrative of Jason Voorhees,” King wrote.

He said the book would have been about the character’s ”hellish fate”, which would have seen him ”killed over and over again at Camp Crystal Lake”.

“What an existential fate!” King wrote.

King adding to the world of an existing horror franchise would have been exciting news for fans of the genre.

However, it seems it will never happen. He suggested that one of the key reasons why he never explored the idea was because “just thinking about the legal thicket one would have to go through to get permissions makes my head ache”.

King said he would be more than happy for producer Jason Blum to turn his idea into what he believes would be a successful film.

“Shouldn’t someone tell Jason’s side of the story?” he wrote, adding: “Blumhouse could do it as a movie.”
