Tim Burton show at MoMA joins the company of Matisse and Picasso

The exhibit of filmmaker Tim Burton's artwork at New York's Museum of Modern Art, which ran November 22, 2009-April 26, 2010, drew the third largest crowds in its history, with 810,500 visitors.

More than 700 examples of his works, from early childhood drawings to never-before-seen drawings, paintings, photographs, concept art, storyboards, puppets, maquettes, and film props express his conceptual artistry in Pop Surrealism.

Top attendance records at the museum that beat the Burton show are the 1980 Picasso retrospective at MoMA reaching a record 976,800 and in second place, the 1992 Matisse exhibition with 940,000 visitors.

The Tim Burton exhibition travels next to the Australian Center for the Moving Image in Melbourne, June 24-October 10 and then the Bell Lightbox in Toronto from November 26, 2010-April 17, 2011. The show includes an illustrated publication.

His unique film collection accompanying the show includes Beetlejuice (1988), Batman (1989), Edward Scissorhands (1990), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Mars Attacks! (1996), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Big Fish (2003), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), and Sweeney Todd (2007), and web projects such as "The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories" (1997).

Burton will soon head the jury at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. His reboot of the fantasy adventure in 3D, Alice in Wonderland, was released in March, starring Johnny Depp and Anne Hathaway.
