The 12 winners of the DK Eyewitness Travel PhotoBritain competition have been announced.

The competition challenged photographers of all ages and abilities to capture Britain's essence in a shot. After sifting through 8,000 images, the judges chose the 12 photos they thought managed to do just that - showing off some of the landmark sites of the UK and the beauty of the British countryside.

The overall winning image, of Leeds castle at sunset, was taken by London-based amateur photographer Frame Muller during a day trip he took to Leeds shortly after being made redundant. His photograph will be published on the front cover of DK Eyewitness Great Britain Guide 2010.

The 12 prize winning entries, from across the competition's categories 'Iconic', 'Heritage', 'Wild' and 'My Britain', will be displayed at Waterstone's flagship store in Piccadilly, London, from the 6th-31st July 2009.
