I live in Canada, but even I can see that Brexit and the Conservative Party are tearing Britain apart

It has become crystal clear to me that the Conservatives have become misguided sheep lost in the wilderness.

They failed on many levels when it came to separating the country from the EU until finally their leader lost control of the vehicle and fell down the ditch. The Conservatives are now left to think of what went wrong and who can replace her. But it would have been wiser to rethink and reconsider the whole thing altogether.

The entire process of leaving the EU has been a failure from the start. But it seems that wisdom is something foreign to a party with a mantra of “my way, or the highway”.

And now, while they are busy trying to choose a leader who can bring the ship back to the surface, the people of Great Britain should not sit back as herds do in slaughterhouses waiting for their turns.

While the world has woken up to the danger of extremism, British society, in general, has failed to detect the same ailment closer to home. Citizens should wake up before it is too late and ask minority right-wing populists to stop speaking on their behalf as if they don’t matter, are no longer relevant or no longer exist.

I don’t mean to interfere in your affairs, but I’m saddened to see a few rotten apples spoil the entire cart.

I wouldn’t have the audacity to make a claim of being pro-Remain or Leave. It is a major decision that you, not only a few hardcore right-wing populists, should be given the right to make. But what I certainly know is the fact that people are stronger together, and embracing isolation is rarely a healthy way forward.

If things take a turn for the worse and the Conservatives manage to have their way, you should blame no one but yourselves for allowing someone else to think for you. Great Britain has been great for generations. It has been the envy of the entire world. It has attracted the top of the cream globally to join its ranks and make the country what it is today.

Don’t get fooled by empty slogans of extremists who claim to make the country “great again”. These selfish, egotistical individuals have failed to manage even their own lives. And they’ve divided people and created mistrust and hatred in the process.

My message to the wonderful people of Great Britain is to wake up and get involved in politics. Don’t let someone with a big mouth do the talking and thinking for you.

Tom Peck’s observation that Boris Johnson is a gremlin who would melt if ever touched by the truth is well made, but not quite the full story. Like many Brexiteers, Johnson is a hybrid that has developed complete immunity against the truth.

It is a deeply frustrating experience when you ask Leavers what they think now that the future is showing with absolute clarity the crippling recession that Brexit will cause.

They mumble vaguely about being bullied by Brussels, sovereignty, scaremongering and a great, if rather vague, trading future; or they get aggressive, and bizarrely accuse you of treachery.

Unlike the tragedy of communism that, despite being a Utopian dream from the start, had to be tried and tested before utter failure was proven, we can see the calamity of Brexit before it happens.

Yet, like the child who touches the flame against the parents warning, there are those that want to try it. The immunity from the truth means in the post-Brexit meltdown, these hybrids will still be saying that it is better than the slavery of economic growth and prosperity imposed on us by Brussels.

America, great?

It’s sad but when the very colour of your skin is viewed as a “weapon” then you’ll always be “armed”, always considered a threat. It explains why #Maga is beyond an abhorrent, repulsive insult to the African American community. For, the very essence of such a racially charged statement begs the question: When was America ever great?

Stop having babies

The topic of climate change and the destruction of the Earth is very much in the news at the moment, at long last, and thank goodness for that.

However, as usual, the elephant in the room is being ignored. The only thing that will save the planet is a smaller human population, which must decrease in the coming years to reverse the damage we have done.

I cannot understand why, in this situation, some form of restriction on the number of children people have is such a taboo subject. I am sure all parents want their children to have a decent life, so why have so many when this exponentially decreases the chances of them having a good life?

We must accept that modern humans are destroying their own home, and in the process, destroying the home of all the innocent life forms that make up this exquisite planet. The scale of this disaster is almost beyond comprehension.

Tennis players need rest

“Judging by the deserted club and public tennis courts I saw yesterday while cycling, a change is desperately needed.’’ How did Colin Horlick (Letters, 9 July) manage to assess the situation at Wimbledon while on a bicycle? It was certainly very busy on Saturday when I was there and, according to a friend, full of people earlier on in the week. Empty seats are often ones that have been bought for corporate entertaining and the lucky participants spend more time being entertained than watching the tennis!

The players need a rest on Sunday. I don’t think there is any danger of the well-oiled machine at Wimbledon falling apart. I have been going for years and years since I was a schoolgirl in Wimbledon and it gets busier and busier.
