Who has the most grand slam tennis titles in the open era?

Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova meet in the first round of the US Open in one of the most eagerly anticipated matches of the entire tournament.

The two former world number ones have long been rivals after an apparent unpleasant comment made by Williams about Sharapova in 2004 made its way back to the Russian.

There is little to separate the two superstars of tennis. They were both ranked as the best in the world in the past and each of them has won the US Open.

Williams came close to making it seven titles at Flushing Meadows last year but was beaten in a controversial final against Niomi Osaka, the 37-year-old reacted badly to being warned about illegal coaching before being penalised points for breaking her racket and verbally abusing the umpire.

The two-week tournament will not be shown live on television, so here’s everything you need to know about how to watch it.
