Tottenham Hotspur have suffered a major injury setback after confirming that Son Heung-min will undergo surgery on his broken arm and miss “a number of weeks”, with striker Harry Kane already out for the majority of the season.

The Spurs forward suffered the injury in the opening minute of Sunday’s 3-2 victory over Aston Villa following a challenged from Ezri Jonsa, and although the South Korea international was able to play the duration of the match – scoring the winning goal in the 94th minute – scans have revealed the significant damage to his right arm.

Son also scored Tottenham’s second goal in the narrow comeback victory, and his absence for the foreseeable future will rob Jose Mourinho of his top two goalscorers this season.

A club statement issued on Tuesday read: “Son Heung-min is to undergo surgery this week after sustaining a fracture to his right arm.

“The South Korea international suffered the injury during our win against Aston Villa on Sunday.

“Following surgery, our medical staff shall be reviewing management options for Son’s rehabilitation with the player expected to be sidelined for a number of weeks.”

With Kane already out for nearly the entirety of the season – a return from hamstring surgery is not expected until the 9 May clash with Leicester City at the earliest – Son’s absence leaves Mourinho short on attacking options, given the pair have combined for 20 Premier League goals this season.

It leaves either Lucas Moura or the untested Troy Parrott needing to fill in as a makeshift striker, with Erik Lamela and Stephen Bergwijn also set to be relied upon heavily to fill the attacking line just as Spurs are preparing to resume their Champions League campaign in a last-16 first leg against RB Leipzig on Wednesday.

Speaking last month after Kane was ruled out, Mourinho said that Parrott is "not ready at all" to fill the void as the main striker, though the Republic of Ireland Under-21 international could be considered for some playing time.
