Premier League top scorer: Who leads the race for the golden boot?

The Premier League returns this weekend after a busy and eventful international break.

And it returns with a marquee clash of old foes, with Liverpool FC the visitors to Old Trafford to face struggling Manchester United on Sunday.

Also struggling are Tottenham Hotspur, in the midst of a crisis, but Mauricio Pochettino’s side have the ideal opportunity to get back on track at home to similarly-ailed Watford.

Chelsea welcome Newcastle to Stamford Bridge while Manchester City visit surprise top-four chasers Crystal Palace, and the the weekend’s action concludes with Arsenal‘s trip to Bramall Lane, with Sheffield United targeting a Monday night shock.

Here’s how we think the Premier League’s big six might line up this weekend:

Tottenham (vs Watford)

Tottenham Hotspur

Hugo Lloris’ dislocated elbow caused Tottenham to bring Michel Vorm back to the club, but Paulo Gazzaniga is expected to start against Watford.

Juan Foyth is back from injury and ready to stake his claim for the right-back shirt, and though Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen are both hopelessly out of form they should get at least one more game in partnership.

The composition of Tottenham’s midfield and attack is somewhat hard to predict, but summer signings Ryan Sessegnon and Giovani Lo Celso are not yet ready to return to first-team action.

Chelsea (vs Newcastle)

Chelsea

Chelsea have stumbled upon something resembling a settled line-up in their last few games, but it was an international break of injury for Frank Lampard’s side.

N’Golo Kante withdrew from the France squad, while both Mateo Kovacic and Andreas Christensen picked up injury issues while away with Croatia and Denmark respectively.

Callum Hudson-Odoi is fit and firing, while Kante’s absence should offer an opportunity for Ross Barkley after a good showing for England in Bulgaria.

Manchester City (vs Crystal Palace)

Manchester City

Eight points behind leaders Liverpool after their slip-up against Wolves, Manchester City have a tricky trip to Selhurst Park.

John Stones and Kevin de Bruyne are both back in training, but it is doubtful either has the match preparedness to start against Crystal Palace, and should return to the bench.

Benjamin Mendy is also fit again, and with left-back a problem position could be pressed into immediate starting duties.

Manchester United (vs Liverpool)

Manchester United

Paul Pogba, David de Gea and Jesse Lingard have all been ruled out for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Anthony Martial may have to settle for cameo roles after their own injury problems.

Sergio Romero will start in goal, while Axel Tuanzebe is expected to continue in the heart of defence.

Solskjaer has a decision to make in midfield, and may favour a second destroyer against Liverpool’s attacking threat, so Nemanja Matic may get the nod.

Liverpool (vs Manchester United)

Liverpool

Liverpool should be boosted by a couple of key returnees, with Joel Matip expected to be fit after missing out with a minor injury and longer-term absentee Alisson set to resume duties between the sticks.

Jordan Henderson endured a tough international break with England but the importance of the game should see him start, even with James Milner in good form.

Indeed, it is likely to be a familiar first-choice Liverpool side.

Arsenal (vs Sheffield United)

Arsenal

After grinding out a nervy win over Bournemouth last time out, Unai Emery may well opt to name an unchanged Arsenal side.

Callum Chambers has made the right-back berth his own, while Dani Ceballos adds creativity to a midfield that has been lacking in spark at times this season.

Bukayo Saka should continue in the front three after a string of solid showings.
