Tournament postponement potentially frees up space to complete club season

Manchester United believe finishing the both the domestic and European season should now be a “priority” after the postponement of Euro 2020.

Uefa, European football’s governing body, announced on Tuesday that their flagship competition – originally due to start this summer – would be put on hold for 12 months.

The tournament will now be held 11 June – 11 July 2021 following the global coronavirus pandemic, to protect the health of those involved and avoid placing unnecessary stress on public services.

The postponement of Euro 2020 could potentially create space for suspended domestic campaigns to resume. Uefa said a “working group” had been established to investigate solutions.

United are one of several Premier League clubs with a vested interest in the domestic and European seasons being completed, with Champions League football at stake.

Following Uefa’s announcement on Tuesday, the club stressed that the focus of football authorities should now be on the club season.

A United statement read: “We note the decision to postpone Uefa Euro 2020 to hopefully allow domestic and European competitions to come to a conclusion as a priority.

“Clearly coronavirus has created an unprecedented set of circumstances and the health and well-being of fans, players and staff has to come first.

“We will continue to play an active role in discussions through Uefa, the ECA [European Clubs Association] and the Premier League and we will monitor developments closely.”

All of Europe's five major leagues have been suspended following the outbreak of Covid-19, with Premier League stakeholders set to meet on Thursday to decide on a course of action.
