Premier League round-up: Liverpool end the year on top

Manchester City take on Carlo Ancelotti’s resurgent Everton on New Year’s Day, with the Italian’s side looking to make it three wins from three against the reigning champions who look to be all but out of the Premier League title race already.

City will welcome Everton to the Etihad Stadium having got back to winning ways against Sheffield United on Sunday, albeit still a staggering 14 points behind runaway leaders Liverpool.

It is a gap large enough to have manager Pep Guardiola writing off their chances of retaining the title for a second year, with Liverpool now firmly in pole position to claim a first English league championship in 30 years, but the City boss has still demanded more from his side to ensure their place in the top four doesn’t come under threat.

Everton meanwhile are enjoying a resurgence under Ancelotti thanks to back-to-back wins over Burnley and Newcastle United, which combined with the four games unbeaten under interim boss Duncan Ferguson has seen the Toffees strong together six games without defeat.

Victory for Everton could see them move ahead of Crystal Palace and into ninth place after cracking the top half last weekend, while a win for City would see them in contention to return to second place in the table by leapfrogging Leicester City.

Odds

Man City to win: 1/4

Everton to win: 10/1

Draw: 11/2

Prediction

The odds against Everton look fairly harsh on first viewing given they appear to be getting back towards expectations in their post-Marco Silva days. Ancelotti has given them a spring in their step and their four-prong attack that did for Newcastle at St James’s Park could well cause City’s patched-up defence a few problems. As a result, we’re going for a narrow upset.

Manchester City 1-2 Everton
