Liverpool team news: Adrian injured by fan who ran on pitch and stood on goalkeeper’s ankle

Liverpool manager reveals back-up goalkeeper Adrian is struggling to make Saturday’s Premier League clash with Southampton after a fan slipped and stood on him celebrating Wednesday’s Super Cup victory

Jurgen Klopp has revealed that back-up goalkeeper Adrian is a doubt for Liverpool’s trip to Southampton on Saturday after injuring his ankle when a pitch-invading fan stood on him during the Uefa Super Cup celebrations.

The 32-year-old goalkeeper only joined the club two weeks ago after leaving West Ham United in the summer, but was called upon to replace first-choice Alisson after the Brazilian suffered a knee injury against Norwich City last Friday that will sideline him for the best part of two months.

It lead to Adrian starting Wednesday’s Uefa Super Cup against Chelsea, where he was hailed by his manager for his penalty-shootout heroics as he saved an effort from Blues striker Tammy Abraham to secure the club their first piece of silverware this season.

But Klopp revealed on Friday that while celebrating the penalty save, one supporter ran onto the pitch to join the players, only to slip and land on the goalkeeper’s ankle. With the joint swollen, Klopp will have to make a late call on Adrian’s fitness ahead of tomorrow’s trip to St Mary’s.

Should Adrian fail to recover in time, Klopp will be left with either 35-year-old Andy Lonergan or 20-year-old Caoimhin Kelleher to select – though the latter is also struggling with injury as he continues to recover from a broken wrist.

Klopp was critical of the fan who jumped the barrier and ran onto the pitch in Istanbul, with the Liverpool manager expressing his bemusement as to why it has become a common theme at their recent matches.

"When we were all together, a supporter jumped over something, was chased by some security guys, slipped, and kicked his ankle. Crazy," the Liverpool manager said at a press conference.

“Yesterday it was swollen, today I spoke to him he said it's much better than yesterday but we have to see. But apart from that, yes, it was a brilliant night for him for sure.

"I don't understand why in the world of social media when we are all together, a supporter jumped over something and kicked [Adrian's] ankle. It is swollen but we have to see.

He added: “We need to think about Saturday to find a way to win the game.

“Andy Lonergan is in training with Kelleher and we have them if we have to make a decision.

“Adrian was a week before, Lonergan has trained with us. Kelleher has potential but is not 100 per cent yet. We will see.”

Klopp also drew on the infamous pitch invader during last season’s Champions League final. Instagram model Kinsey Wolanski ran onto the pitch in Madrid in what transpired to be a publicity stunt for her boyfriend’s pornographic website, and Klopp has not seen the funny side of the matter after also witnessing a pitch invader last week.

"We love our fans, no doubt but if they could stop doing that. We played versus City, someone ran on the pitch,” he said. “Norwich, someone as well. It's not funny. Like the girl in the CL final, she made money. What can we do?”

Klopp added: “If the person cannot stop himself then the fans around him must. It is not funny. Wow! How can something like this happen?

“Adrian won’t go for a scan. We wait for the swelling to go down. The flight didn’t help but I saw him now, it looks better and make a decision.”
