Son Heung-min snatched a win for Tottenham to punish a Bjorn Engels error and hand Aston Villa a harsh 3-2 loss at Villa Park.

Villa took the lead early on when Toby Alderweireld put through his own net under pressure from Tanzania striker Mbwana Samatta. But the Belgian made amends soon after, swivelling in the area and swiping home a volley, high into the roof of the net to leave Pepe Reina with no chance.

And Spurs weathered the pressure from the hosts before taking the lead before half-time, with Engels’ challenge on Steven Bergwijn enough to convince VAR to award Spurs a penalty. Son Heung-min’s protracted run-up saw Reina accurately predict the direction of the spot kick, but the save counted for little as the Korean followed up quickly to stab home the rebound.

Engels and compatriot Alderweireld were at the heart of the game again after the restart and the Villa centre-back snatched the opportunity to make up for his earlier foul, jumping high above the Spurs defender to glance home a header and bring the sides level once more.

Grealish continued to plot his way through the white shirts in search of a winner, while Reina made two smart stops to deny Son, but one final twist saw Engels at fault again and this time the Korean would not be denied, sliding home the winner in stoppage time.
