EA Sports have announced that newly-appointed Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has been voted by fans to be the FIFA 16 UK cover star alongside the global pack star, Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

Henderson, the first Liverpool player to feature on the EA Sports FIFA franchise front cover, saw off competition from Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane and Thibaut Courtois as more than nine million fans around the world voted for the first time in franchise history for their favourite player to be on the FIFA 16 cover.

One of those famous fans was basketball star and Liverpool shareholder LeBron James.

“Being part of the first FIFA cover vote was an incredible honour and it’s an amazing feeling to know that the public voted for me to come out on top and to be on the cover of FIFA 16 alongside Messi,” said Henderson. “I’m extremely proud to become the first Liverpool player ever on the cover and the support I’ve had from fans around the world over the past few weeks, particularly Liverpool supporters, has been overwhelming. It’s great to realise every young footballer’s dream and I’m grateful to everyone who voted.”

Upon receiving the captain's armband earlier on today, the 25-year-old said: "I'm absolutely delighted and proud. It is a great honour and a huge privilege to be named as the captain of this football club.

"When Steven [Gerrard] wasn't in the team last season, I tried to do the best I could when I stepped in and took the armband. Now I'll be looking to carry that on and continue to grow as a captain.

"I'll look to give my best all of the time, put the team firmly first and try to give them - or help them with - whatever they need from me."

Henderson arrived at Anfield in June 2011 and has made 186 appearances for the club.
