Ashes 2019: England post worst Ashes score for 71 years after scoring dismal 67 runs

Hosts’ attempts to get back into the Ashes series took a hammer blow after Joe Root’s side posted their worst score against Australia since 1948

England posted their worst total in an Ashes innings in 71 years after Australia dismissed the hosts for just 67 runs on day two of the third Test at Headingley.

In what was one of England's worst batting displays in recent memory, Joe Root's side managed to lose six wickets in the morning session alone, with the captain himself going for a duck to mark the worst score of the innings.

The embarrassing collapse saw Australia claim a 112-run lead heading into the second innings, with Josh Hazlewood claiming a fantastic five-for as he wrapped up the order by bowling last man Jack Leach.

Another unwanted record saw Joe Denly claim the lowest top-score from any English batsman in Ashes history, with his 12 runs leading the way for England.

Trailing 1-0 in the series, England were looking take advantage of good conditions to surpass Australia's first innings score of 179.

However, Jason Roy's struggles continued as he fell early for nine, before Joe Root followed his golden duck at Lord's by lasting one more ball on his home ground without scoring.

Rory Burns went next, before England's in-form batsman Ben Stokes, on eight, went for a shot he did not need to and edged to David Warner -- one of four catches taken by the Australia opener.

Coming out on 54-6 after the morning session, the wickets continued to fall as Chris Woakes was out first ball after lunch, with Australia making light work of the England tail to embarrass the hosts and open up a first innings lead of 112.
