Chocolate in slices similar to cheese singles used for sandwiches have gone on sale in Japan.

Twitter user Mitsuhiro Saito shared some of the first images on the internet of the new food item, which has left many baffled.

Twitter’s translation reads: “Holy crap I bought chocolate like a slice of cheese.”

The slices are made by Japanese chocolatiers Bourbon, and can be bought online.

But the product can only be ordered in bulk, at 60 slices per order.

One Twitter user Sibaichi said: "Wow, it's great idea :) I want to buy it".

But not everyone likes the idea.

Twitter user Eaniesuga tweeted: "Never once in my life have I thought 'I wish these chocolates came in cheese slices."

The Daily Mail reported that the product had sold out, despite its ¥3,2400-Yen (£18) price tag for 60 slices.

The promotional images on the company’s website shows ideas for how to use the chocolate slices.

Customers are advised to use the product on bread, in a crepe, rolled up in a cake sponge or on top of crackers.

The makers also suggest users can melt the chocolate on bread, to give a chocolate spread effect.

It describes the product as slices of chocolate, which it says are “full-bodied, melt in the mouth smooth ganache.”
