Donald Trump impeached - what happens next?

Donald Trump spent his evening on Christmas Day tweeting furiously about “crazy” house speaker Nancy Pelosi and the “scam” impeachment inquiry against him.

Lashing out at the California Democrat in his latest string of posts on Twitter, the US president said: “Why should crazy Nancy Pelosi, just because she has a slight majority in the House, be allowed to impeach the president of the United States.

“Got ZERO Republican votes, there was no crime, the call with Ukraine was perfect, with ‘no pressure.’ She said it must be ‘bipartisan & overwhelming,’ but this scam impeachment was neither.

“Also, very unfair with no due process, proper representation, or witnesses. Now Pelosi is demanding everything the Republicans weren’t allowed to have in the House. Dems want to run majority Republican Senate. Hypocrites!”

The US president was impeached last week by the Democratic-led House of Representatives on two charges over his pressuring of Ukraine to announce an investigation into former vice president Joe Biden, one of the top contenders for the Democratic presidential nomination, and Mr Biden’s son.

He has also been charged with abuse of power and obstructing Congress’ investigation.

Mr Trump, only the third president in US history to be impeached, has insisted he did nothing wrong.

His comments on Wednesday night came after Ms Pelosi reiterated her demand for senators to agree to hold a fair trial before the House sends them articles of impeachment against him.

Responding to a Twitter tirade from Mr Trump days earlier in which he complained she had given him “the most unfair trial in the history of the US Congress”, Ms Pelosi tweeted: “The House cannot choose our impeachment managers until we know what sort of trial the Senate will conduct.

“President Trump blocked his own witnesses and documents from the House, and from the American people, on phoney complaints about the House process. What is his excuse now?”

first lady a gift.

During a video conference call with members of the US military stationed overseas for the festive season, the president discussed everything from North Korea’s nuclear threat to gift shopping for Melania Trump.

He reportedly told a soldier: “I got her a beautiful card,” adding: “I’m still working on a Christmas present.”

Mr Trump has previously acknowledged his shortcomings in finding meaningful gifts for his wife after becoming president in 2016.

He similarly admitted to Fox to only gifting her a “beautiful card” for her birthday in 2018.
