A man has been charged with murder and manslaughter after a 13-year-old girl died from long-term injuries sustained when she was an infant.

Dean Smith is suspected of killing Maisie Newell, who was allegedly assaulted as a baby in 2000 and eventually died in June 2014, London's Metropolitan Police said.

The 44-year-old appeared at Willesden Magistrates' Court and remains in police custody.

Maisie died in King's Lynn, Norfolk.

Police reportedly arrested a 39-year-old man in July 2014 on suspicion of her murder. He was later bailed.

Yvonne Blake, the area coroner for Norfolk, adjourned an inquest into the teenager's death until 8 March 2019, a decision taking during a review hearing in November 2018.

Mr Smith from Watford, will appear at London's Old Bailey today.

Scotland Yard did not provide any further details about the case.
