Motorist who ran red light, hit cyclist and tried to cover it up jailed alongside three family members

A motorist who drove through a red light and ran over a cyclist, then tried to cover up his involvement in the crash, has been jailed alongside three members of his family.

Angelo Kaminski left his victim with catastrophic injuries – a fractured pelvis, skull fracture and a bleed on the brain – after the crash in north London in 2018.

The 28-year-old fled, abandoning his car nearby after blasting through a second red light. He and three family members then tried to concoct a cover story, while his victim lay comatose in hospital.

Abdul Hadi, of Kentish Town, died in hospital 18 months after the crash, in July last year, never having woken up from his coma.

Detective Inspector Cheryl Frost, of the Metropolitan Police, said Mr Hadi’s family had been “deprived of a loving husband and father” by a man who had thought only of himself in the aftermath of the crash.

The incident happened at about 11.30pm on 10 January 2018, while Kaminski was driving on Camden Road. He drove through a red light at the junction with Royal College Road and struck Mr Hadi.

Kaminski then drove away, ditching his Renault Megane about 1km away in Kings Terrace. Later, his cousin Adrian Kaminski picked him up and took him to Stansted Airport.

There they met Angelo’s father, Grzegorz, and brother, Patryk, who had arrived on a flight from Poland. Together, they plotted to cover Angelo’s tracks by claiming his car had been stolen.

They reported the supposed theft at Edmonton police station and even told officers they had tried looking for the hatchback.

But a resident in Kings Terrace had reported the abandoned car to police, whose forensic team was able to retrieve material linking it to Angelo Kaminski. It had “significant damage consistent with being involved in a collision”, officers said.

Following a trial this week all four men were found guilty of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, while Angelo Kaminski had already pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice.

Angelo Kaminski was jailed for seven years and banned from driving for six years at Wood Green Crown Court on Friday. His father, 47, of Wolverton Road in Dudley, brother, 21, also of Dudley, and cousin, 26, of Bounces Road in Edmonton, were all sentenced to two and a half years behind bars.
