Tesco’s new boss had an unexpected item in his bragging area yesterday: the grocer was the “stand-out” supermarket in the first three months of the year, with sales up 1.1 per cent after a sales slump in 2014.

It was Tesco’s strongest performance in 18 months, according to analysts at Kantar Worldpanel, helping it arrest its falling market share. Its till takings fell 2.7 per cent in the 12 weeks to 7 December, an improvement on previous months.

Tesco’s success hit Asda – it took 2.1 per cent less in the first 12 weeks. Morrisons and Sainsbury’s, respectively, had a 0.4 and 0.5 per cent fall. But Aldi’s market share hit 5 per cent; Lidl rose 3.5 per cent and Waitrose was up 4.9 per cent.
