Iconic children’s store Toys R Us has collapsed into administration with the loss of 3,200 jobs.

As a result, stores across the UK will be closing in the coming days but customers can still enjoy one last hurrah after the company announced it will be discounting stock and launching big promotions nationwide.

But, when does the sale start and what are the best discounts?

Why is it closing down?

Toys R Us has been battling against an ever-changing retail environment for months as consumers shopping habits shifted from bricks and mortar outlets to online purchases from the likes of Amazon.

In September, the firm’s American parent company filed for bankruptcy protection in the US and Canada and while many of the group’s UK stores proved resilient, the bigger, warehouse-style outlets became a financial burden.

“Despite its pledge to shut down stores, to scale back operations to save costs and its frantic attempts to find a buyer, Toys R Us has unfortunately fallen foul of a perfect storm hitting bricks and mortar retailers across the board,” said Julie Palmer, regional managing partner at consultancy Begbies Traynor.

When will the sales begin?

It has been announced that the first round of store closures will begin in the coming days but that all of the stock is subject to clearance discounts and special promotions.

Gift cards and vouchers will continue to be honoured while the stores remain open but customers are encouraged to redeem them as soon as possible.

“Customers are encouraged to take advantage of these special offers as soon as possible,” Simon Thomas, joint administrator and partner at Moorfields, said on Friday.

“Whilst stock levels are generally high, customers may find that the more popular brands begin to sell-out over the coming days.”

Unfortunately, transactions have been suspended online until further notice.

What discounts can you expect?

Reductions will take place across every store in the UK and for now the toy chain has announced that it will be discounting 25 per cent from every single product.

This will be applicable to all the big brand names and Babies R Us products but with closures imminent customers are encouraged to take advantage as soon as possible.

Can you still return items?

Unfortunately Toys R Us has confirmed that it will no longer be accepting refunds or returns, however, it will be processing exchanges for those with proof of purchase.
