Thanksgiving 2018: The 75 major US stores closed for the holiday

The list will be updated as more stores announce Thanksgiving closures

As Americans gear up for the approaching holiday season, the biggest day of shopping draws closer.

However, according to the third annual list released by BestBlackFriday.com, this year, 75 stores have already announced they will be closed on Thanksgiving - meaning no access to eager Black Friday shoppers.

The number comes after an increasing number of retailers began opening on the holiday with Black Friday sales.

This year, there are a few big name retailers on the list of closures including Costco, IKEA, Sam’s Club, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Barnes & Noble and Lowe’s.

The list also includes home goods stores Crate and Barrel, At Home, Hobby Lobby, Home Depot, HomeGoods, Pier 1 Imports and Homesense.

Clothing retailers planning to close include Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack, TJ Maxx, H&M, Marshalls, dressbarn, Dillard's, and Burlington.

According to Phillip Dengler, head of editorial and content marketing for BestBlackFriday.com, this is the most confirmed closures they’ve seen at this point in the year - with more expected to be added as November 22 approaches.

As of now, all of the stores on the list are ones that typically remain closed on Thanksgiving - with none of the closures coming as a surprise like last year.

“Last year, GameStop shocked everyone by announcing it would be open on Thanksgiving after being closed the previous few years. On the other hand, Stein Mart and Shoe Carnival decided to close last year after being open in previous years,” Dengler said.

This year, however, the website is not expecting any “notable additions,” as the biggest stores will likely continue to open on the holiday because many cannot “afford to close.”

“Despite Thanksgiving foot traffic slowly declining, the number of Americans who frequent stores on that day is still extremely high,” Dengler explained, “which means the big boys, including Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Macy’s and Kohl’s will all likely stay open.”

As for the reason stores choose to forgo opening on the holiday, it most often has to do with the importance of spending quality time with family.

Dengler said: “Retailers understand that Thanksgiving is one of the top family-oriented holidays, and people just do not want to work.

“We agree with the stance and commend stores into giving employees a much-needed break for Turkey Day.”
