On Sunday, the Big Apple was awash with rainbow-coloured paraphernalia as the 49th annual New York City Pride March took place.

The event was truly a sight to behold, with the parade starting at 7th Avenue and 16th Street and ending at 5th Avenue and 29th Street.

There were many famous faces in attendance, including tennis legend Billie Jean King, who acted as a Grand Marshal at the event, superstar Lady Gaga and gun control activist Emma González, who was named one of this year’s Community Heroes by the organisers.

The route of the march passed by the Stonewall Inn, which is perceived by many as being one of the most iconic sites for the LGBT+ community following the Stonewall riots of 1969.

A number of political figures also joined in the proceedings, including former Sex and the City actress and current New York City governor candidate Cynthia Nixon, mayor of the city Bill de Blasio and governor Andrew Cuomo.

Two million people took to the streets to celebrate the joyous occasion, according to CBS.

Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, which inspired the very first Pride march in US history in 1970 in New York.

To honour the important occasion, New York will be hosting the global WorldPride event in 2019.

The aim of WorldPride is to raise awareness of LGBT+ issues on a global level.

The very first WorldPride took place in 2000 in Rome, with the event being hosted by London in 2012.

Pride Month takes place every year in June to commemorate the Stonewall Riots.

Numerous cities across the world celebrate its LGBT+ communities with marches. Paris will be celebrating on 30 June, with further parades also being held in London and Madrid on 7 July.
