Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas are to produce a new reality dancing competition based on celebratory Indian wedding traditions.

The series, the title of which has not yet been revealed, has been greenlit by Amazon.

It will follow engaged couples as they prepare to take part in the ritual Sangeet ceremony with their families, as Chopra and Jonas did during their wedding in December last year.

Meaning “music” in Sanskrit, the Sangeet ceremony is a traditional aspect of Indian weddings, which sees the two families who are soon to be bonded by marriage take part in dance performances.

“We re-watched the video of our Sangeet last week on our first anniversary, and the togetherness of our family and friends during this event still sparks the same warmth and excitement that it did just over a year ago at our wedding,” Chopra said.

“The Sangeet is a centuries-old Indian wedding tradition, that not only celebrates the union of two people, but also signifies the introduction and bonding of two families coming together in marriage.”

Casting for the television series has already begun, with the show due to be filmed in 2020.

Amazon described the competition as a “celebration of the love, marriage and magic that ensues when friends and family come together through music and dance the evening before the wedding”.

The couples and families who take part in the programme will come from a variety of backgrounds.

They will be filmed rehearsing for their Sangeet performances, for which they will receive assistance from choreographers, stylists and creative directors, in addition to being shown preparing for their upcoming nuptials.

Jonas stated that the days preceding his and Chopra’s Sangeet were “some of the most special, memorable moments of the weekend”.

“Bringing the concept of this musical celebration to the mainstream in a new way, through couples setting out on one of the most exciting journeys of their life, is an idea that we are proud to bring to life with Amazon,” the musician said.
