The daughter of the late conservationist Steve Irwin has announced her engagement on Instagram.

On Wednesday 24 July, Bindi Irwin celebrated her 21st birthday and announced her engagement to her longtime partner, former professional wakeboarder Chandler Powell.

Irwin shared a photograph of the couple on Instagram, showing a close-up of her engagement ring.

"On my birthday I said 'yes' and 'forever' to the love of my life," the former Dancing With The Stars champion wrote in the picture's caption.

"Chandler, close to six years ago I fell in love with you and every day since has been a whirlwind of adventure and true happiness."

Irwin added that she is looking forward to her future with Powell, writing: "Here's to a lifetime of friendship, purpose and unconditional love – now let's get married already!"

Powell also shared a post on Instagram celebrating the couple's engagement, recalling how he and his fiancée first met at Australia Zoo.

"I immediately fell head over heels for her kind and thoughtful heart that radiates so much light," the 22-year-old stated.

"Proposing in her very favourite place in the zoo, surrounded by animals, seemed like the perfect way to embark on this incredible new chapter in our lives."

Irwin and Powell's Instagram posts have both been inundated with messages of congratulations.

"Oh my goodness I'm so happy for you," wrote actor Ruby Rose.

"The purest love!!! Soul mates. So happy for you both," singer Lisa Origliasso of pop duo The Veronicas commented.
