Actor Jodie Comer has opened up about struggling to adapt to fame following her role as no-nonsense psychopathic assassin Villanelle on BBC America’s Killing Eve.

“The job I do doesn’t end when the camera stops rolling, there’s this whole other world,” she admitted during an appearance on the Two Shot Podcast, which originally aired in December.

Discussing her appearance on a US talk show last year, Comer said she “stupidly watched it and read the YouTube comments” which slammed her for “losing her accent”.

The Liverpool-born star explained: “I know all the people who comment on YouTube are aliens anyway, but I was speaking as myself and they were saying I’m losing my accent.

“I’d adapted it a little bit because it’s an American audience and a lot of the time people are like: ‘What is she saying?’”

The actor – who lives at home with her family in Childwall, Liverpool – previously opened up about being worried she’d have to “lose” her Scouse accent in order to become a successful actress.

“Now I’m so glad I never succumbed to that pressure,” she told Stylist in October.

“I love home, I love the people [in Liverpool]. It’s a huge part of who I am. I can only be away from there for so long before I’m ready to go back.”

The star added that the world of fame is something she “can find difficult”.

“I don’t want to pretend to be something I’m not, but I worry that sometimes [my accent] comes across all over the place,” she explained on the podcast.

The Doctor Foster star recalled an incident with a fan in a bar during a concert who filmed her without her permission.

“My mate Liv just tapped her and was like: ‘Can you not do that?’ The girl felt really embarrassed and I was like ‘It’s fine, just say hello’.

“I’d rather that than being videoed and I’m unaware because then I start getting paranoid. It’s so intrusive.”

On Sunday, Comer’s Killing Eve co-star, Sandra Oh, won the ‘Best Actress’ gong for her role as MI5 officer Eve Polastri at the 24th Annual Critics Choice Awards on Sunday.

In her acceptance speech, Oh praised Comer for her “trust” and “talent”, describing acting together as one of the “great privileges of her life”.

‘There’s one person who is my obsession, my other half,” she said. “The person who’s pushed me to the limit and that is the incredible Jodie Comer.”

In December, BBC America released the first look at what to expect from season two of Killing Eve, expected to air in spring 2019.
