How many people in your area are under 30? What proportion of people are Christian? Do more than half of the local population own their homes?

An interactive quiz created by the data visualisation centre at the Office for National Statistics (ONS) is a fun way to test how savvy you are about where you live.

Head of digital content Alan Smith said he was fascinated by the results of a report called The Perils of Public Perception which highlighted how different public perceptions of statistics are from official figures.

The report suggested that people’s intuitions are often influenced by personal experience, as well as reports (or misreports) in the media.

What the ONS quiz does is challenge the participant to see how their views may be skewed by one thing or another.

Just enter your postcode and answer the questions to find out whether you’re an expert on your local area: the results should give you a surprising view of the everyday world in which you live.
