Meghan Markle’s health and fitness regime includes green juice and pilates

‘It’s all about the balance’

All eyes are on Meghan Markle, following her every step as she prepares for life as an official member of the royal family.

Markle has led an impressive life, working as an advocate for United Nations Women, a global ambassador for World Vision and making a name for herself as the character Rachel Zane on US drama Suits.

Outside of her professional commitments, Markle has previously spoken about the importance that she places on leading a healthy life.

From regularly drinking green juice to treating herself to some delectable French fries, here are the key aspects of Markle’s health and fitness regime.

Health and fitness philosophy

When you’re constantly under the spotlight and recognisable all over the world, it can be easy to succumb to the pressures piled onto you to look and act a certain way.

However, Markle has always tried to maintain a lifestyle that is both nourishing and sustainable.

“It’s all about the balance,” she told The Chalkboard.

Being healthy isn’t just about trying to tone your body or achieve glowing skin - it’s also about feeling rejuvenated from the inside out.

“As I’m getting older, my approach to aging is quite different,” Markle told Best Health Magazine.

“I make sure that I take care of my skin and body, especially with the work hours I have.

“And I don’t just take care of myself for aesthetic reasons but because how I feel is dictated by what I’m eating, how much rest I’m getting and how much water I’m drinking.”

For Markle, working out is extremely therapeutic.

“My health, my state of mind, the feeling you have after a workout, all of these things drive me to step onto my mat or go to the gym,” she told Women’s Health magazine.

“Sometimes the idea of working out sounds absolutely dreadful, but I always remind myself of how good it will feel afterward. Euphoric, almost!”

Work regime

Working as an actress can be a gruelling experience, what with early wake up calls and long days on set.

In order to ensure that her health stayed in tip-top condition while shooting Suits, Markle followed a plant-based diet during the week.

“When I’m filming, I’m conscious of what I eat,” she told Best Health Magazine.

“I try to eat vegan during the week and then have a little bit more flexibility with what I dig into on the weekends.”

However, Markle made sure not to restrict herself too much.

“But at the same time, it’s all about balance,” she said.

“Because I work out the way I do, I don’t ever want to feel deprived.

“I feel that the second you do that is when you start to binge on things. It’s not a diet; it’s lifestyle eating.”

Favourite food

Born and raised in California, it should come as no surprise that one of Markle’s apparent favourite fixes is a green juice.

“Green juice is a food-as-medicine philosophy for me,” she told Delish.

When asked by The Chalkboard what her chosen fast-food option would be, her response was a green juice.

“A green juice. That’s fast. And it’s food,” she said.

“(It’s been many moons since I went through a drive thru.)”

However, Markle has admitted in the past that she has a particular penchant for French fries.

“French fries - I could eat French fries all day,” she told Best Health Magazine.

“And I love pasta. I love carbs - who doesn’t love a carbohydrate?

“The same goes for wine. Of course I’m going to have that glass of wine - it’s delicious and I enjoy it.

“Do the things you enjoy within reason. Know your body and what works for you and you’ll be fine.”

So, the lesson here? Don’t hold yourself back from indulging when a tasty food takes your fancy.

Go-to workouts

On Markle’s now-deleted Instagram account, she used to share photos showing her displaying her impressive yogi skills.

Her love of yoga, it turns out, is in her DNA.

“My mum was a yoga instructor so that practice is in my blood,” she told Women’s Health magazine.

“I love an intense vinyasa class - and even better if it’s blasting hip-hop and done in a dark room with candlelight. The best!”

Markle has also confessed that she enjoys going running as a form of meditation.

However, as a future member of the royal family, going for leisurely jogs near Kensington Palace may prove difficult.

In which case, Markle may opt to practice more pilates, a workout that she has previously spoken very highly of.

“Pilates Platinum is hands down the best thing you could do for your body,” she told Harpers Bazaar.

Pilates Platinum was founded by personal trainer and close friend of Markle, Heather Dorak.

“There are so many workouts that you try out once and never go back to; Heather’s studio is the complete opposite,” Markle said.

“You keep coming back for several reasons: first off, your body changes immediately… give it two classes and you will see a difference."
