Anne Hathaway tells Ellen DeGeneres why she gave up drinking alcohol

'My son's getting to an age where he really does need me all the time'

Anne Hathaway has spoken candidly to Ellen DeGeneres about why she’s chosen to give up drinking for the foreseeable future, explaining that her main motivation is being present for her three-year-old son.

The Oscar-winning actor appeared on DeGeneres’s daytime talk show to discuss her latest film Serenity, a thriller that reunites her with Interstellar co-star Matthew McConaughey.

While discussing the film’s Mauritius location, Hathaway revealed that McConaughey had taken her on a tour of the best rum spots on the island.

When asked by DeGeneres what their sightseeing venture had been like, Hathaway jovially admitted that she couldn’t remember due to the amount of alcohol she consumed.

The actor outlined why she eventually gave up drinking in October 2018, and plans to abstain from alcohol for the next 18 years.

“I’m going to stop drinking while my son’s living in my house, because I don’t totally love the way I do it,” Hathaway stated.

“He’s getting to an age where he really does need me all the time.”

Hathaway married actor and businessman Adam Shulman in September 2012. Their son, Jonathan, was born four years later.

The turning point for Hathaway came when she took Jonathan to school with a hangover, although she clarified that she hadn’t been the one driving the car.

“That was enough for me, I didn’t love that one,” she said.

In 2017, Hathaway spoke to Jezebel about how regretted posting a photo of her son on social media.

While the photo only showed the back of his head, the actor felt as though she’d “broken a seal in inviting people into my life” by sharing it on Instagram.

“And even though I felt as though I had done it in as protective a way as I could, even though it was a moment I was incredibly proud of, I don’t know that I’ll ever do it again,” she added.
