Snapchat has stopped working for users around the world.

Tens of thousands of people reported issues with the app, according to the website health tracker Downdetector.

It led to the term 'Snapchat down' to trend across social media, as users rushed to understand what was wrong.

Snapchat tweeted: "We're aware some Snapchatters are having trouble using the app. Hang tight, we're working on it."

It is not the first time there has been issues with the app in recent months, with another major outage taking place in October.

Social media apps often experience difficulties when they are flooded with traffic, suggesting the latest outage could be the result of New Years' revellers overloading the app.

Downdetector registered issues across Europe, the US and Australia.
