Samsung Galaxy S10 and Galaxy X could feature 1TB of internal storage for smartphones for first time

Huge amounts of storage will bring a laptop-like experience to smartphone users

Samsung has unveiled the world's first one terabyte of storage in its smartphones, opening up the possibility that it could feature in two of its forthcoming smartphones: the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy X.

Both phones are expected to be released in the coming months, with a slew of recent leaks suggesting both will feature improved specs and a range of new features.

The South Korean electronics giant announced that the chip powering the storage has entered mass production, though no official word was given on when it will be introduced.

The 1TB of embedded Universal Flash Storage (eUFS) doubles the capacity of Samsung's most advanced 512GB version and will allow users to store 260 10-minute 4K videos, bringing smartphone storage capacity in line with high-end laptops.

"The 1TB eUFS is expected to play a critical role in bringing a more notebook-like user experience to the next generation of mobile devices," said Cheol Choi, an executive vice president at Samsung Electronics.

"What's more, Samsung is committed to assuring the most reliable supply chain and adequate production quantities to support the timely launches of upcoming flagship smartphones in accelerating growth of the global mobile market."

Previous rumours have suggested the Galaxy S10 will come in three variants, each ranging in size, specs and price. The standard Galaxy S10 is expected to be complimented with an entry-level Galaxy S10 Lite and a high-end Galaxy S10 Plus.

One price list leaked earlier this month suggested the top tier model of the Galaxy S10 Plus could feature 1TB of internal storage. Samsung does not comment on rumours concerning forthcoming devices and did not confirm the authenticity of the price list.

Despite no official news from the world's most popular smartphone maker, several leaked images have appeared online showing what to expect from the Galaxy S10.

An image shared online of what appeared to be a Galaxy S10 Plus being used on a bus in South Korea seemed to confirm a hole-punch design to incorporate the front-facing camera into the screen.

The official release date of the Galaxy S10 is expected to take place at a Samsung 'Unpacked' event on 20 February. This may also mark the unveiling of Samsung's more mysterious foldable phone, expected to be called the Galaxy X or Galaxy F.

In an unconventional move, Samsung teased the folding phone in November during an event that took place in the dark.

More recent leaks suggest both Samsung smartphones could feature next-generation technologies, such as reverse wireless charging.

This would mean users could share their battery life with other phone owners wirelessly by holding their devices close together.

Both the US and South Korean market are also rumoured to be preparing for a device that supports 5G, though it is not clear whether this will be rolled out to wider markets.
