Instagram down: outage stops app and website working as timelines refuse to refresh

Instagram has stopped working as users' timelines refuse to refresh.

Users report that new posts are refusing to appear in their feed, leaving them looking at old pictures if they can see the timeline at all.

As such, the problem might not be immediately obvious: the app might look as normal, but the pictures that show could be hours old.

Instagram has been hit by a run out of outages recently, and the latest comes almost exactly a month after one of the biggest in the app's history.

Unlike during those other recent issues, however, WhatsApp and Facebook did not go offline. Because the three apps are part of the same family, they are regularly hit by issues at the same time.

Problems were being experienced across the world, according to the website Down Detector, with the most affected regions appearing to be the UK and US. The majority of users reported issues with the news feed, but others said that stories and even the ability to log in had broken.

Unlike other major services, Instagram does not maintain a server status page of its own for telling users about problems.

Instead, it has occasionally tweeted when an outage lasts for long enough. At the time of publication, the official Twitter account had not mentioned the problems, and the latest post was about tinsel.
