Apple has revealed the most popular of all its apps as 2018 comes to a close.

Fortnite is, predictably, the most downloaded free game of the year by people eager to play on their iPhones.

The game recently said it had been played by more than 200 million people and is entirely free to download on iOS, as it is on every platform.

Drake also topped Apple Music's list of the most popular songs. The singer is a confirmed fan of Fortnite, and even owns part of an e-sports organisation.

Away from games, The Driving Theory Test 2018 Kit was named the most popular paid-for iPhone app of the year, with messaging service WhatsApp the most popular free app.

On iPad, drawing software Procreate was the best selling paid-for app, with YouTube the top performing free app.

The most downloaded paid-for game on iPhone was guessing game Heads Up!, with world-building title Minecraft the best selling paid game on iPad.

Apple's App Store offers music, video, podcast, app and game downloads to more than two billion iOS devices worldwide.

On the Apple Music streaming service, rapper Drake had the most popular song of the year with God's Plan, ahead of Dua Lipa and Calvin Harris and their summer hit One Kiss.

The original motion picture soundtrack for musical The Greatest Showman, starring Hugh Jackman, was the most popular album of the year, ahead of Drake's Scorpion and the deluxe edition of Ed Sheeran's Divide.

TED Talks Daily was named the UK's most downloaded podcast, with Love Island: The Morning After the most downloaded new podcast.
