Five things you didn't know about St Patrick's Day

On Sunday 17 March, thousands of people around the world will celebrate the patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick, on St Patrick's Day.

The annual event is widely regarded as a jubilant occasion, full of high-spirited revelry, lively music and ostentatious parades.

Throughout the St Patrick's Day weekend, several pubs, restaurants and bars are offering customers discounts and deals on signature Irish food and drink.

Some of the deals on offer are fairly traditional, providing discounts on signature Irish beverages such as Guinness and whisky.

Others are slightly more unconventional, giving classic cocktails an Irish twist or creating specialities such as a clover-inspired ice cream.

Here's a selection of the best food and drink offers this St Patrick's Day:

Nando's

If your name is Patrick, Paddy, Padraig or Patricia, you live in Ireland and you're a fan of Nando's, then you've been bestowed with the luck of the Irish.

For St Patrick's Day 2019, the restaurant chain is offering anyone with one of the aforementioned names a limited edition medium Peri-Peri sauce bottle when they spend €7 (£6) or more at one of their Irish branches.

The bottle will also come personalised with the customer's name.

Participating Nando's restaurants include branches at Academy Street and Mahon Point in Cork; branches in Blanchardstown, Dundrum, Liffey Valley, Mary Street, Santry, St Andrews Street, Swords, Tallaght and Dún Laoghaire in Dublin, and the branch in Newbridge in Kildare.

The offer is available from Sunday 17 March until Monday 18 March.

Chin Chin Labs

How do you fancy a taste of Ireland in a scoop of ice cream?

Liquid nitrogen ice cream parlour Chin Chin Labs in Camden, London, has created a limited edition St Patrick's Day "Lucky Clover" ice cream.

The ice cream is said to "taste like the smell of walking through a meadow and a deliciously fluffy chocolate potato cake swimming in fudge stout sauce". We'll let you be the judge of that!

The ice cream will be available to purchase at the ice cream shop on Saturday 17 March as part of Camden Market's St Patrick's Day Festival.

Bentley's Oyster Bar and Grill

If you have a proclivity for seafood, then this is the deal for you.

Bentley's Oyster Bar and Grill in Mayfair, London, is offering the "Feast of St Patrick's" on Saturday 16 March and Sunday 17 March in celebration of the jovial event.

Costing £70 per person, the four-course lunch will feature classic Irish dishes such as Rooftop smoked salmon, Irish stew, bacon and cabbage, prune, sauternes and hazelnuts.

Slug and Lettuce

If you're after a tasty tipple on St Patrick's Day, look no further than Slug and Lettuce.

The bar chain is providing customers with discounts on Irish drinks from Thursday 14 March until Sunday 17 March.

An Irish Espresso Martini is on available from £8.25, and also falls under a two for one offer.

Over St Patrick's Day weekend revellers can also enjoy a baby Guinness shot at one of the bar's chains, in addition to a Jameson whisky ginger and lime beverage, made especially for St Patrick's Day.

Jameson whisky at Asda

Who doesn't love a great discount?

For this year's St Patrick's Day, Asda has paid tribute to the Irish roots of whisky by reducing the price of Jameson Whisky from £23 to £15.

A 70cl bottle of the Irish whisky is also available at Tesco and Sainsbury's for the slightly higher price of £16.

Borough Market

Borough Market in Southwark, London, is renowned for its eclectic mix of stall food.

From Wednesday 13 March until Saturday 23 March, the famous market is commemorating the annual celebration of St Patrick's Day with an event called "Taste the Greatness of Northern Ireland".

The market will play host to an array of classic food and drink from Northern Ireland, from traders including cheese collection Indie Fude and Northern Irish cereal brand White's.

On Sunday 17 March, the market will also put on a free St Patrick's Day event from 12pm until 4pm.

The event will feature cooking demonstrations, entertainment and plenty of free food samples.
