The Victoria and Albert Museum is set to host the largest-ever exhibition of fashion photographer Tim Walker's work.

Titled Tim Walker: Wonderful Things, the display will pay homage to Walker's "fantastic imagination" and "extraordinary" career spanning more than two decades.

The exhibition, which will open on 21 September 2019 until 8 March 2020, is the third exhibition ever to be held for the British photographer.

After graduating with a photography degree at Exeter College of Art, Walker moved from London to New York, where he worked as an assistant under the tutelage of renowned fashion photographer Richard Avedon.

Describing his photography style as a combination of "extravagant staging and romantic motifs", Walker went on to shoot campaigns for a variety of fashion publications, including Vogue, W and Love magazine.

The photographer's first major exhibition was held at the Design Museum in London in 2008.

The V&A exhibition will feature 10 new photographic projects by Walker, all of which have been inspired by the artefacts on display in the museum.

The exhibition will showcase 300 items and has been curated by Walker's long-time collaborator Shona Heath.

“To me, the V&A has always been a palace of dreams – it’s the most inspiring place in the world," the photographer said.

"The museum’s collection is so wide and eclectic, and I think that’s why it resonates with me so much."

Walker said that many of the objects he came across in the V&A "made my heart swell".

The photographer explained that his aim was to photograph each object in such a way that it would reflect both the beauty of the artefact, while also conveying his emotional response to it.

The exhibition will feature 100 photographs from some of Walker's past projects.

The photographs depict some of the most recognisable names in the fashion industry, including models Edie Campbell and Lily Cole and designer Alexander McQueen.

Susanna Brown, curator of photographs at the V&A, revealed that the prospect of the exhibition has been discussed since 2015.

"Tim’s photographs and Shona’s exhibition design combine to create a show that I think our visitors will adore," Brown said.
