Meghan Markle ignores protocol by arriving at a black-tie ceremony wearing an Alexander McQueen suit

Meghan Markle is known for her impeccable style and enviable wardrobe but one recent public outing raised questions about her choice of shoes.

During her appearance at her first-ever Royal Ascot, the Duchess of Sussex wore a white shirt dress by Givenchy and a pair of black leather pumps - which appeared to be a size too big for her feet.

However, according to fashion expert Harriet Davey, what appears to be a faux pas may actually be an intentional decision made with comfort in mind.

“Celebs often go a size up, or even two, in the shoe department when they're at an event or on the red carpet and it's for one reason we can all relate to - to avoid blisters,” Davey told The Sun, before adding that feet begin to swell upon standing for long periods of time.

Because blisters occur when feet rub against shoes, which is more likely to happen with swollen feet, a shoe that is too big is the perfect solution.

Acknowledging that it can be difficult to walk in shoes that are too big, Davey revealed: “A trick of the trade is to stuff the toe with padding like tissue or cotton wool, and this can be taken out once they feel like they need a bit more room in their shoes.”

Avoiding blisters by wearing ill-fitting shoes also means avoiding chronic foot issues later in life, such as bunions, according to Bright Side.

The style hack also prevents pinching and squeezing feet - as there is plenty of room.

Considering this isn’t the first time the former actress has worn shoes that are too big, it seems she knows when to utilise the trick.

During Meghan and Prince Harry’s engagement announcement in November, the Duchess of Sussex’s nude strappy heels were also noticeably large.

By opting for shoes that are slightly oversized, Markle ensures that she can attend royal engagements in flawless style without worrying about aching feet.
