A significant portion of Conor McGregor’s time may be spent wearing sportswear, but that doesn’t mean the former UFC champion doesn’t have classic style.

He's known for his affinity for unique bespoke suits, and the boxer recently revealed to GQ that his style icon is actually another sports champion.

“For me, the OG of fashion and male style is David Beckham,” McGregor said. “David Beckham was a pioneer. He paved the way for that kind of style.

“We have to go to David for inspiration, who I’d look up to style-wise, back in the day.”

According to the 31-year-old boxer, Beckham has even sent him clothes.

“I actually talked to David. He sent me some clothes. They’re in my office right now as we speak,” he said.

This isn’t the first time the former MMA champion, who retired in March 2019, has praised Beckham’s style.

In 2017, McGregor told Entertainment.ie: “David Beckham is an OG. An OG of the whole picture from a fashion standpoint that I’ve capitalised on and am continuing to capitalise on and from a sporting standpoint - his was football, mine’s fighting.”

Earlier this month, McGregor released the latest collection from his popular clothing line August McGregor, which he first launched in partnership with David August in 2018.

In addition to T-shirts and athleisure wear, the line also sells suits and suit separates, which is understandable considering the first big purchase McGregor made was custom tailored suits from a tailor in Dublin city centre.

Recalling his father’s motto: “You know you’re successful when you’ve got a fully tailored suit,” McGregor told GQ that it “stuck in my head for so many years”.

Now that he is able to afford the wardrobe he used to covet, the former UFC fighter says he occasionally matches his outfits with his various cars.

McGregor, who is 21st on Forbes’ list of highest-paid athletes in the world for 2019 with an income of $47m, told the publication: “Sometimes I do it subliminally. I’ve got a good few cars, so whatever I pick out, I could probably match it to one of the cars,” adding that he also does this with his watches.

“An accomplished man has got to have a watch wardrobe,” he said.
