On Monday night, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) celebrated the winners and honorees of the 2019 CFDA Fashion Awards at the Brooklyn Museum in New York.

The annual event, which has been running since 1981, is one of the most anticipated in the fashion calendar, recognising the contributions of designers, journalists, stylists and models to the fashion industry.

This year’s ceremony was hosted by comedians Hasan Minhaj and Jessica Williams, while actor Yara Shahidi and designer Tom Ford also presented awards on the night.

Among those honoured at the 18th CFDA Awards was Brandon Maxwell who won the Designer of the Year award, while singer Jennifer Lopez received the Fashion Icon Award.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were awarded Accessory Designer of the Year for their luxury label, The Row, while Rick Owens took home the accolade for Menswear Designer of the Year.

In one of the highlights of the evening, Michael Kors surprised outgoing CFDA chairwoman Diane von Furstenberg with a tribute before she handed over the organisation’s chairmanship to Tom Ford.

“I have been privileged to lead the CFDA for the last 13 years,” said Von Furstenberg.

“In fashion, we are about glamorous entrances, but beautiful exits are equally important. I could not have wished for a better exit, a more glamorous upgrade, and a better successor than Tom Ford.”
