Beyoncé has released the music video for the song "Spirit" from the soundtrack for the new Disney live-action remake of The Lion King.

Described by the star as a "love letter to Africa", the music video is a visual spectacle, combining bold outfits with beautiful scenery for an overall powerful effect.

The music video was shot at Havasu Falls, a waterfall located in Havasu Creek in the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA.

The singer – who stars as the adult lion Nala in the Jon Favreau-directed Disney film – wears a variety of colourful ensembles in the video, including a pink and red ruffled sunset-esque gown, a waterfall-inspired royal blue dress and a lime green outfit.

One of the highlights of the video for many members of the Bey Hive (Beyoncé's dedicated horde of fans) is the appearance of her eldest daughter, Blue Ivy.

The seven-year-old is filmed wearing a pink and red ruffled dress similar to that of her mother's, her hair dyed a dusky shade of red.

In an interview with ABC News, Beyoncé explained the thought process that went behind the aesthetic of the music video.

"The concept of the video is to show how God is the painter and natural beauty and nature needs no art direction," the Emmy-nominated artist said.

"It's the beauty of colour, the beauty of melanin, the beauty of tradition."

Beyoncé added that the music video is a "love letter to Africa", and so she wanted to ensure that it consisted of "the best talent from Africa".

"I wanted it to be authentic to what is beautiful about the music in Africa," the singer stated.

Over the weekend, Beyoncé attended the European premiere of The Lion King in Leicester Square, London alongside her husband, rapper Jay-Z.

The star was filmed making the acquaintance of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and telling the royal couple that she "loves" them.
